Okedo Taiko

|
Okedo are drums with heads hand sewn and held onto a
lightweight body with rope. The skins are hand processed in our shop
from fresh hides and are of the highest quality for long wear and
excellent tone. The body is made of vertical grain redwood staves with
a slight curve on the sides, finished smooth on the inside and
reinforced on the ends with high tension banding. The rope for all
okedo is high quality marine nylon.
Two styles of okedo are available. Daibyoushi-daiko are okedo
with heads 24 inches or smaller and have a length approximately equal
to the diameter of the heads. Oshime-daiko have a length approximately
1.25 times the diameter of the head. Daibyoushi-daiko in the smaller
sizes are popular for carrying on stage while dancing. Oshime-daiko in
larger sizes are used by some groups as their big drum as a less
expensive and lighter, yet visually impressive alternative to a large
odaiko. Small okedo fit well with shime and small nagado to make a set
with different sounds and pitches.
